Dhaka: The High Court has granted permanent bail to BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and standing committee member Mirza Abbas in a case involving the clash between police and BNP members on December 7 of last year in the city’s Nayapaltan area.
The order was made on Wednesday by the High Court panel of Justices Md. Salim and Md. Riaz Uddin Khan following the conclusion of the final hearing on a plea filed by Fakhrul and Abbas seeking bail in the case.
In connection with the same petition, the HC granted them six-month ad interim bail on January 3.
The HC also issued a rule urging the state to justify why they should not be granted permanent bail in the case.
The case was filed with Paltan Model Police Station on December 8, 2018, one day after the conflict that began in front of the BNP’s Nayapaltan headquarters. In the clash, one person died, and dozens of others suffered injuries.
Fakhrul and Abbas were held on December 9, the day before their Dhaka divisional mass gathering.
