Chittagong : Mamunur Rashid Mamun. He was the GS of MES College, the country’s largest private educational institution. He was the co-president of the Chittagong Metropolitan Chhatra League Mofiz-Rahim Committee formed in 1988. He also became a member of the Executive Committee of the Metropolitan Awami League, Mannan-Mahiuddin Committee. In the second Chittagong City Corporation election of 2000, he became the Commissioner after defeating the brave freedom fighter Ahmedur Rahman Siddiqui from Shulakbahar Ward No. 8. He was always in the mainstream of politics.
Late leader MA Mannan was a great confidant of ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, When AJM Nashir Uddin’s grouping with Mohiuddin Chowdhury was at its peak, Mamunur Rashid Mamun served as Mohiuddin’s second in command. The grouping was largely handled by Mamunur Rashid Mamun, who was in an important position of influence, prestige, money, and finance, suddenly slipped because of a mistake. In early 2001, when his organizational news did not get any importance for some reason, he entered the press room of the daily Purbokone office and publicly raised his hands to senior journalists.
The journalist community of Chittagong erupted in protest of this incident. Mamunur Rashid surrendered to the court in the related case by riding in the car carrying the flag of Labor and Manpower Minister MA Mannan, the then president of Metropolitan Awami League, in the face of continuous agitation by journalists from all levels. The court rejected the bail plea and sent him to jail. After a long imprisonment, Mamun left the country after getting bail.
Mamunur Rashid Mamun returned to the country in 2009 when Awami League was in power. But in the last 13 years, he could not turn around in politics. However, the optimism of the politicians has not decreased so much. They think that Mamunur Rashid Mamun was very influential in Chittagong politics. His supporters were also numerous. By consolidating those forces, he could reorganize his position. But later, why he could not walk the path as expected is not understandable.
It is known that in the last 13 years, none of his programs were visible. Did not participate in any joint political program. As a result, in today’s politics, the Mamun chapter is now largely forgotten, discussed, and criticized.
For the past few days, that Mamun has been seen in random banner posters. A number of posters and a few banners are adorning the city’s GEC Mor, Gate No. 2, Nasirabad, Bayezid flyover, focusing on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s public meeting at the Chittagong polo ground on December 4. However, Mamun’s banner posters are very simple and poverty-stricken compared to the way others have pasted big banners all over the city.
Politics-savvy passers-by say that despite the banner-poster plight, at least the missing once-influential Mamunur Rashid Mamun has been found.
When asked about this, Mamunur Rashid Mamun told Ekushey Patrika on Thursday evening, “Yes, the boys put up some banner posters in my name on the occasion of the Prime Minister’s public meeting.”
But you could have been more active, and you could have played a role in the party if you wanted, why not – Mamunur Rashid Mamun said, brother, I have done a lot in my life. I don’t want to spend another penny. The body is also sick. I have been to Chennai for treatment several times.
He said that people who did not join Chhatra League or Jubo League in life are now big leaders of the Awami League. Without reading one, or two, they are reading three in one jump. The senior leaders of the party know what I have done for the party. However, Mohiuddin Bhai and Mannan Bhai are not alive now. Mohiuddin Bhai loved me very much. He established me in politics. If they had, I might have been in a position. Engineer Musharraf Bhai, the living legend of politics, loves me very much. He knows me. In the future, if the Musharraf brothers pull me and evaluate me, I will take politics seriously.
Mamunur Rashid said that he had not been completely off politics for the past 12 years; he has conducted various programs, including the distribution of food and relief among the needy on various occasions, including National Mourning Day, Children’s Day, Sheikh Russell’s death anniversary. But did not promote and showdown.
